A Very Persistent Illusion: The Astrology of 2018 - Urania"s Well Astrology

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
~ Albert Einstein

Like most of you, I’ve been curious about where we are headed in 2018, so I’ve been poring over my ephemeris, calculating transits, and casting cardinal ingress and eclipse charts — three astrological methods of gaining insight into future events. This post will be long, but I’ll break out the more technical astrological details into separate paragraphs for the astrologers, so those of you who just want the conclusions can skip through.

The theme for this year is grounding and reality checks, with Earth and Water signs emphasized. A big part of the reality check will be much of humanity coming to an inescapable understanding and visceral awareness of how all life on Earth is intertwined and interdependent. Some will continue their efforts to deny that fact, even in the face of incontrovertible evidence, but eventually, the dams that hold back the onslaught of reality break.

Yule

9b46c218b2e98810db3073595c447845
Yule, (pronounced EWE-elle) is when the dark half of the year relinquishes to the light half. Starting the next morning at sunrise, the sun climbs just a little higher and stays a little longer in the sky each day. Known as Solstice Night, or the longest night of the year, the sun"s "rebirth" was celebrated with much joy. On this night, our ancestors celebrated the rebirth of the Oak King, the Sun King, the Giver of Life that warmed the frozen Earth. From this day forward, the days would become longer.

Book Study - Casting Sacred Space

The use of casting as a means of establishing sacred space is a common practice in Wiccan and Neopagan traditions. In fact it is widely considered the most important step in spiritual and magickal work. And yet few really know how to do it or do it well.

In Casting Sacred Space, Neopagan practitioner Ivo Dominguez, Jr., offers a comprehensive introduction to the techniques and rituals of casting, including:How to become grounded and centered before one beginsThe proper timing for casting and ritual workHow to open up one’s psychic senses to work with subtle energiesHow to set the stage for magickal work both internally and externallyProtection, symbols, and meditations for maintaining sacred spaceThe Circle, the Quarters, and other modes of casting sacred spaceQuartering, energy work, and many cross-practice connections including Qabala and chakras.

This is a practical, accessible handbook for the beginner with cross appeal to seasoned practitioners of ritual magick.

2017 South Jersey Pagan Pride Day

SJPPD on 10/07/17- Workshop at 1:30 PM!

The Journey from Hod to Netzach: or how I came to Love the Tower Card, by Karen Bruhin

"There is a lot that happens magically when we truly initiate from one level of our practice to another. Our mundane lives get shaken up and stirred while we get more clarity in our actual spiritual/magickal practices, and the dance goes back and forth between the two. In this class we will take on quick over view of the Qabalistic spheres of Hod (Splendor), Netzach (Victory), the path between them (27), and the Tower card from the tarot, and how they relate to initiation."

Karen Bruhin is a 3rd degree initiate within the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel (ASW),www.sacredwheel.org

) a Wiccan syncretic tradition. She is the High Priestess of Tenders of the Earth Temple (http://tet-asw.org/

) founded in 2011 and which based in NW Philadelphia. A practitioner of a variety of esoteric disciplines, Karen has been active in Wicca and the local Pagan community for the past 18 years. Additionally, Karen is the Captain of the Gryphons, a magical order within the ASW that is charged with the magical protection of the ASW. She offers ongoing classes through Mt. Airy Learning Tree and through the coven as well as co-coordinator for ritual at 2017 Philadelphia Pagan Pride Day. She has previously taught at Spring Magick, Autumn Magick, Philadelphia Pagan Pride and Free Spirit Gathering.

Psyche and Eros

I spent last weekend with Psyche and Eros: hearing their story from Greek mythology; exploring the challenges, promises, jealousies and angers among the characters; ritually re-enacting the story before choruses of men and women, all under the guidance of Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki (pronounced ‘no-VEE-ski’), head of the Servants of the Light, an international non-denominational mystery school.

Urban Earthwitch: Urban Animist

Cincinnati Fire Escape, by Derek Jensen (Tysto). CC 2.0 License.

Feeling connected to nature in the city isn’t impossible. It’s as simple as stepping outside and allowing your instincts to take over. In most people’s workaday worlds they fail to feel this critical connection. They spend mere seconds outdoors, rushing from the front door to the car with their purse handle between their teeth while they wrestle with outerwear, carefully shifting the commuter mug from one hand to the other, dropping keys on the ground, picking up the keys, deactivating the car alarm …

Open The Door Softly - PaganSquare - PaganSquare - Join the conversation!

Over the last several years, I have noticed more people expressing that they are encountering a thinning of the veils, openings between the worlds, crossings to and from the neighboring realms, and so on. These reports have been increasing in number and the intervals between reports have been decreasing. Significantly, these encounters and observations are less linked to the times and places that are traditionally thought of as naturally liminal or during the times in the changes of the seasons of the Sun and Moon when these passages are expected. I have read and heard a variety of suggestions to explain this phenomenon, and many of them are reasonable and plausible. I’d like to propose that there is also a slow and steady shift in the Astrological tides that is also one of the root causes of this change. There will be just enough Astrology in this post to offer an explanation without bogging down in a lesson in Astrology.

“The Nature Of The Divine” and “Company Of The Great Ones" with Michael Smith

February 25 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

A benefit for the New Alexandrian Library.

[wpeevent id="1190"]

Class “The Nature Of The Divine” (2 hrs)

Much is said, written, discussed, and frankly, avoided concerning the Divine nature and humans’ relationships to Them. In this class we will examine one system of relating the various God and Goddess forms, the Divine Nature that enlivens them, and how we relate to Them. We will explore both practical questions, such as ‘when I hear the voice of the Goddess in my mind, how does She do that?’ and highly metaphysical questions, such as ‘Who do the Gods and Goddess worship?’

Ritual “Company Of The Great Ones” (1 hr)

In this ritual we will anchor the presences of six Great Ones using two triads: Maiden, Mother, & Crone and Youth, Father, & Sage. After calling them to our circle, we will honor their places in our lives. Then we will listen with our souls for whatever we must hear. We will end with an offering of thanks. Note: This ritual is not for the faint of heart or those that are ungrounded.

Michael Smith, Gwydion Stormcrow, has been practicing Wicca, Magick, and various esoteric disciplines since 1989. He has been active in the pagan community since 1993 when he became a member of the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel (ASW), a Wiccan organization in the Mid-Atlantic region. He is an Elder of the ASW and and formally served as High Priest of Coven of the Rowan Star, a coven in that Tradition. He is also involved with the Tradition"s New Alexandrian Library. President Trump attracts magical ire | The Wild Hunt

Hurling curses at the so-called leader of the free world does raise ethical questions separate from the political ones. As noted previously, adherents to the threefold law of return and similar edicts are mindful that what they work will revisit them in turn. The Wiccan Rede, “an it harm none do as you will,” also stands as warning against working negative magic.

That doesn’t sit well for people who agree with Witch and shaman Mat Auryn, who last month wrote, “As we continue down on our path, many of us start seeing the flaw of fulfilling the Rede as we meditate upon it. The act of existence is harmful by nature. The act of eating kills something, regardless of our dietary choices. The body itself tends to be constantly breaking down and destroying life as it exists.”

To help place the ethical issues in context, we turned to Ivo Dominguez, Jr., who has written a number of books on the practice of magic.

Tales of a Shamanic Healer: A new Mythic Story, to bring hope & guidance

During the Soul Retrieval training last month, a student was gifted with an amazing story. A newly-formed myth, from beginning to end, came through in a Journey for him. It was incredible to witness, and reminded me of the importance of doing Sacred Work, and training others to be healers.

It will soon be part of a fantastic book, but here is the Myth (reproduced here with permission). I hope that it brings all readers a sense of wonder, magic, and healing in these dark times.

May the Peace of the Goddess Be Upon You: A Goddess for These Times - PaganSquare - PaganSquare - Join the conversation!

The Goddess I have decided to discuss this week is the Roman Goddess Pax. As you can see in my contemporary rendering of her, she is often depicted with an olive branch, a cornucopia (peace brings abundance), and a dove. In this time of fear and panic, we especially need her now to remind us that even if the world around us is filled with hate and rage, we can look within for peace, and we have someone upon whom we can call for that peace.

I"ll Tell You - PaganSquare - PaganSquare - Join the conversation!

It is a fairly common custom for Traditions and Schools to have materials that are oathbound, teachings or practices that can only be shared with members or initiates. I have friends that are old school Witches, or Masons, or one of any number of systems that can eloquently explain why they have oathbound materials. I will not speak for them, and I honor their right to follow their ways. The Tradition of which I am a member, the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel, does not have any teachings or practices that are oathbound, in fact it is more accurate to say that we are openbound. It is not my intention in this post to assert that oathbound, openbound, or any other approach is better than the other. What constitutes better is a matter of your perspectives, values, the purpose of your system, and the nature of your goals. What I’d like to offer here is information on how we manage boundaries for our lore and practices. The Assembly has been around since 1984 and we are 13 covens with a 14th in the process of formation.

Chant Albums From The Assembly of the Sacred Wheel

The Assembly of the Sacred Wheel’s chant albums were created with the intention that the chants be simple, powerful, and easily performed by individuals and ritual groups. They are mostly a cappella with some percussion and an occasional instrument to ease there use in covens, circles, groves, etc. Most of the chants do not require a wide singing range and the harmonies, while pretty, are not necessary.

WITCHING HOUR: Along with her friend Kenna O’Rourke, Arthur is the co-host of the iTunes podcast “Witching Hour,” in which they discuss contemporary witches in modern times, the idea of a witch, what witches mean for femininity and womanhood, and how witches are portrayed in pop culture. “We watch really old ’80s movies about witches, like ‘Teen Witch,’ and talk about that, or a H. P. Lovecraft short story about a witch,” she says.

Couldn"t make it to the big ritual that had been planned for today due to lousy roads near me. Bob has a miserable cold and didn"t want to share it, so we improvised and participated from afar.

I truly missed being with my Circle of Capricorn sisters and brothers.
